Free Software For Music Production

,
MUSIC STUDIO SOFTWARE :

Free software for music production is a great way to get started in composing your own music. However you'll quickly find that as you delve into creating more and more beats the limitations of these free software applications will become apparent.

Free Software For Music Production

Getting into the music industry is extremely difficult, given it is a highly competitive market place. There are literally hundreds if not thousands of people trying to get in every day, and sadly a lot of them fail, for a number of reasons, but primarily for the poor quality of their beats. So producing quality beats is one simple step in the right direction. If you get a name for yourself as a quality beat maker then, you could potentially have producers head hunting you.

However, before you are able to mix-it-up with producers you will first need to get your beat making skills up to a reasonable level. One of the best ways to do this is to teach yourself how to use various types of computer based beat software programs. You can find some free and paid software solutions online.

A major benefit when getting into computer based beat programs is that they do not take up additional space in your music studio, like a drum machine, keyboard or musical instruments. In fact if you have a laptop then your studio becomes instantly portable, which means you can be creating beats where ever you are.

Another major benefit is that a lot of these applications come with a huge library of pre-recorded beats and midi sounds, which in some cases can replace bulky instruments like the drums, keyboard and guitars. Of course there is one proviso here, the quality of the sound depends on the software application you choose, and the capability of your sound card.

Take time to learn how to use a beat maker software application correctly. Understand how to use the features properly, and then you'll be producing the high quality music that you hear on the radio and television everyday. You'll find that you can create quality sounds in no time at all with minimal cost and a lot of fun.

A really good way of learning how to use a beat maker software program is to try to reproduce the music of one of your favorite songs. This will help you to get an appreciation for the instruments involved; how to differentiate the sounds and how to reproduce the sounds of each instrument. I've found this to be one of the best ways to learn how to produce your own beats, because you can use ideas from songs and modify them to create your own unique sound.

There are literally hundreds of different software applications available online and the rule of thumb I always use is you get what you pay for. If you don't have much cash to buy a beat making program then you could use a free audio package like Audacity. Audacity is really basic in features and does not come with pre-recorded beats, however you can create multiple tracks and save them in mp3 and wav formats. Fifty dollars will give you a reasonable software product that will come with pre-made beats and midi sounds. So start out with a free product first if your budget doesn't allow for it, then upgrade and buy a product that offers you more features. As you get good at creating music you will need to upgrade to a better software product to be competitive in the music business.

The Elements of Hit Songwriting

,
MUSIC STUDIO SOFTWARE :

Some songs make it big. They get endless radio and media-of-the-moment play. They top the Billboard charts. They launch great careers. One song, one hook, is often all it takes. And most songs - the ratio is probably too big to calculate - do not. A lot of it is simply "luck."

The Elements of Hit Songwriting

And yet, there are specific elements that most breakout hit songs have in common. What are they, and how can you use them to write your own breakout hit?

The Best Way to Write a Song Is Not to Write a Song

You read that correctly.

It's almost impossible to force a great song into the world. I don't care what software you are running, it's almost impossible to achieve brilliance without genuine inspiration. Let's face it, music is an emotional language. You can't intellectually or mathematically create an emotionally powerful piece of music.

If there is one rule that I work by, it is this: the best songs write themselves. Both the lyric and melodic hook will come instantaneously, will grab you by the lapel and scream "write me!". THEN is the time to sit down and really get to work. Writing a great song is like making a sculpture. The stone is already there, you just need to bring the beauty out of it by careful craftsmanship.

Captain Hook

Think about the following phrases: "Yesterday", "Uptown Girl", "Maria", "Jingle Bells". Unless you just landed on the planet Earth, those words immediately got a melody going inside your head. A hook is where a simple phrase of a lyric and a simple turn of a melody come together and get stuck in your brain. It's called a hook, because it catches you like a fish. I just produced the musical Man of La Mancha, and for many nights I could not sleep because of "The Impossible Dream". Yes, because I couldn't turn that song's irresistible hook off in my head, dreaming was indeed "impossible".

Hooks can be simple or complicated, but they must be clear. Beethoven, in his fifth Symphony, has a four note hook. In some songs, the hook is the whole song, repeating in a manner almost hypnotic. In others, it is something that you wait for and happens only two or three times in the course of the song. Marry the melodic hook to an evocative and clear lyric hook, such as "don't kill me again" or something like that, and you are on your way.

Oh, I Know What You Mean

TV shows like Seinfeld were amazingly successful because so many people related to the characters. Everybody feels like George at some time. Every couple has "their song" that they relate to.

Listeners will connect to your song much more if they can relate to what is being said. You can write about situations that many people find themselves in, such as a new relationship or a changing phase of one's life. People turn to music when they are dealing with life's moments, so consider writing music to talk to them about those moments.

Who Done It?

People love a good mystery. They love having something unknown to look forward to. And they love it even more when you surprise them with more than they expected.

That's a great rule for songwriting. If I start out with a lyric such as "I'll let you live until Sunday", I have created suspense. Who am I going to kill on Sunday, and why? Then you can tell a great story. This keeps people listening. If you then deliver a zinger of a surprise, you've written a great song. A song is indeed a story. It doesn't have to be narrated, but it should make promises and reveal new surprises with each verse.

The Arc of Triumph

Have you ever listened to Ravel's Bolero? It is a Spanish dance with one basic A-B phrase that repeats endlessly. And yet, for some reason, it is immensely popular and deeply satisfying to listen to. Why is that?

It is because Ravel build an arc. With each repetition, the instruments change, the orchestral depth changes, and eventually the piece builds to a full orchestral climax. Ravel masterfully draws the listener in through his arc of energy.

You can do the same thing in your songs. If you start off at full steam, you have nowhere to go. If you start simply, and let the song grow, you can enchant the listener, bringing him with you on your musical journey. Just when you reach a climax, you can write a bridge that completely changes the energy. After the bridge, you come back to the refrain, and then the listener has a feeling of having come back home again. Awesome.

Consider how your song will have an arc of energy to it, and make it dynamic and dramatic. Don't hold back!

What Was That About?

If there is one thing that really bothers me about a lot of songs, it is this: I don't know what the heck the song is about! If it takes me more than two listens to figure out what the song is saying, something's wrong. "Abstract" songs that only mean something to the writer or require accompanying notes are simply self-indulgent. If you want that, fine. But don't expect it to be a hit (unless you follow its publication with a high profile murder, which I don't recommend. Think of the families!) You are writing to say something, so say it! Don't talk around it.

That does not mean that every song has to be simplistic. Songs can and should have layers of meaning. What I am saying is that by listening to the song once, I should clearly grasp the surface meaning. Then, each time I listen, I gain new insight and see the deeper levels. What is greater than a song that provides continuous discoveries?

Shoot the Messenger

Performance is important. Recording quality is important. Being able to sing on key, with emotion and expression, and with clear enunciation are absolutely essential. If you can't sing well, get someone else who can. You don't need to be Barbra Streisand, but you don't want somebody listening and saying "that person cannot sing to save themselves" either. If you believe in the song, give it the best possible presentation.

Same goes for recording. If you know what you are doing in a home recording studio, by all means do your demo there. If not, I urge you to have it professionally done. This will do two things: 1) you will think twice about your material and make sure it is ready before putting down money to record it, and 2) you will get a recording to be proud of. Your goal is to write a hit song, so don't torpedo your fantastic work with a bad recording.

Nobody can guarantee that the song you write is going to make you the next Big Thing. In life, there are things that we control and things that we only influence. We control the song that we write, but we only can influence how successful it will be. It's best to focus on what we control and to write a compelling, moving, unforgettable song. Then, we will do the best we can to record it to excellence, and promote it to success.

What Every Songwriter Needs to Know About Re-Use Performance Rights

,
MUSIC STUDIO SOFTWARE :

Many songs now incorporate loops, re-used drum tracks or portions of other artist's songs to the point that those elements may constitute the entire piece. With recycling of other's recorded performances in small sections of songs becoming commonplace, I think every songwriter will benefit from knowing what rights they have and do not have to use that material.

What Every Songwriter Needs to Know About Re-Use Performance Rights

If you're writing a song, recording a demo or producing a master for public release and decide it will be based in whole or in part on a drum performance that's already been recorded you are safe to use it without additional licensing if you take the part from consumer drum plug in software or from a drum machine because it's implied at purchase that's what the purchaser will be using it for. If however, it's a live drum track recorded in a studio as part of some other song, you likely need to contract with the original drummer to use it. That's true even if you paid for that first performance, unless that instance was for the specific purpose of additional re-use and you have a contract stating that. Ditto all of the above for sax parts, guitar tracks, keyboards, vocals and other instruments.

What about borrowing part of an entire recorded song from your favorite band? I had an interesting situation arise recently regarding just that while producing a demo for a songwriter. He wrote a tribute country song to Johnny Cash, with the intention of using an actual recording of Johnny Cash's voice speaking his trademark, "Hello, I'm Johnny Cash" followed immediately by a few bars of Cash's "Folsom Prison Blues" as a fade out.

We had to track down the original rights holders and request permission to use both the spoken portion and the music before going ahead with using the Johnny Cash performance. Johnny's son, John Carter Cash, was kind enough to forward the information we needed. While waiting for permission to be granted, a demo version without that performance was signed by a music publisher. So now there are two versions and possibly a third as the songwriter is considering re-recording the Johnny Cash performance with a Johnny Cash tribute band in order to avoid recurring licensing fees.

Realize that a song, and a song's recorded performance are not the same thing. In regards to re-recording a song, a songwriter has the right to choose who first releases it. Once it happens though, there is no longer a right of refusal. Anyone can then get a license. Do you want to record and release Led Zeppelin's classic rock hit "Stairway To Heaven"? Simply file a mechanical license with the publisher and do it, they can't stop you even if you sing it off key :) That goes for any song of any genre that's been released publicly. Now an actual recorded performance can be licensed for re-use on a case-by case basis. Permission can be refused or granted in each case. Note that "public domain" has nothing to do with either situation- that's free use and a song has to be at least seventy years old in most countries to qualify.

What about samples? Obviously you can use a sampler to record a tree falling in the forest (unless no one's around, then it doesn't make a sound so how could you record it, right?) A bird chirping or some other natural sound can surely be recorded without a license...or can it? What if the bird is a trained performer and a member of the Actor's Guild? Hmmm...I believe that would indeed require a license. A single kick drum sample probably doesn't require a license as it's a simple sound, not a performance.

As you can see there are many common situations well defined by copyright law but there are others that are less so and can be confusing. Obviously this is an article, not legal advice and there are variations that may not be addressed. Definitely consult a lawyer if you're unsure of your rights in a given situation but reusing others work appears to be a trend that is on the upswing and will likely be a permanent part of creating music. So use those loops and samples to your heart's content but be sure to get the proper license to cover your...well let's just say to cover your legal end.

Music Maker Software To Produce Your Own Beats

,
MUSIC STUDIO SOFTWARE :

Have you ever thought about making your own music but assumed it would be to hard? Well in this day and age music making software makes it all to easy and you don't have to spend thousands of dollars on digital audio workstation equipment.

Music Maker Software To Produce Your Own Beats

Most music making software can be downloaded and installed on your computer so you can make beats and produce your own music. With sound effects, drum, guitar and other instrumental sounds built in all you have to do is use your mouse to make a sequence of beats to make music.

Some things to look out for are - can it be used offline as well as online which makes it handy when you don't want those distractions like email, MSN and Facebook.com. Does it comes with lots of samples like drums, piano, guitar and others. Can you make multiple bars and create more beat patterns instead of just looping the same bar like most software out there does.

Using music sequencer software can be a lot of fun and addictive because if you don't know how to play an instrument like the drums you can just use your mouse to put it all together. If it doesn't sound right just change the beat till it sounds good.

One thing to think about if you want to create your own music professionally using music making software is to make sure the software uses high quality 44.1 stereo. There are to many beat makers out there that only use mp3 and honestly the quality is no where near as good as it should be.

Why Create Your Own Music Using Music Maker Software In The First Place?

Well some people use programs like this to make beats for their songs they have written, some do it for fun and others sell their beats online and make good money.

But if your serious enough about making your own music you could produce your music with the intention of becoming famous. Imagine being a one man band making your own rap or hip hop songs with wicked beats.

Studio Gear vs. Software

This is why modern technology is so great in this day and age. You don't need all the studio gear like turn tables, motifs, m-audio sound cards, cubase, synthesizers and drum machines because the software has it all built in.

Studio gear can cost as much as ,000 but by using music software you can pay under and still make quality beats. You do the math.

Ok so what else do you need other than music making software?

First your going to need a PC or Mac computer with some free space, some speakers and a creative mind. That's it. No need to buy expensive music equipment worth thousands of dollars.

Hollywood Screenwriting

,
MUSIC STUDIO SOFTWARE :

Hollywood screenwriting is a different animal than traditional screenwriting. A metonym for American movies, Hollywood undoubtedly leads the world production of movies, television serials and commercials. It goes without saying that Hollywood is the home for illustrious celebrities in every walk of cinema life. With the establishment of the first studio in the Tinsel town in early 1900s, the sleepy township was suddenly transformed into the production capital of films. As the center was rearing up to go, hundreds of auxiliary industries mushroomed to provide the much needed support. These included film studios, cinematography, singers, music and movie directors, screenwriters, actors, distributors and other members of the crew.

Hollywood Screenwriting

Hollywood screenwriting grew in popularity as the film industry galloped unbridled. New themes, novel scripts and kaleidoscopic changes demanded skilled writers who could match their talent with public mandate. Reel life is generally depiction of real life existing during a particular epoch. Thousands of writers of varying expertise flocked the place to give the silver screen a new dimension and try their fortune at the most promising profession. These wordsmiths were an enthusiastic lot and till date, all of them come here starry-eyed and a yearning to win fame and recognition for what they think to be their masterpieces. Some do succeed, but most fade out with passage of time.

The reason for Hollywood screenwriting becoming an almost indomitable work is that the savvy screenwriters are not made of the same mettle as in the days gone by. Most lack the inspiration and many give up before they reach even the lowest rung of the ladder. True, there is a plethora of opportunities available today, like formal training, software to take away a large chunk of the bother of compiling seamless scripts, writing companies to assist the aspirant and the swelling size of the market. Hollywood screenwriting has become a serious business. On an average, there are about a hundred and fifty feature films, dozens of TV movies, and seventy odd TV serials produced annually and more baffling is the fact that a minimum of five scripts are written and paid for, for each of the artistic creativity.

Screenwriting was never before such a lucrative prospect as it is today in Hollywood. Do not go by the defeatists' statistics alone. Aim for the stars to reach the rooftop at least! The culminating award is the Oscar. Keep your eyes focused on it and forge ahead without paying heed to the obstacles on the way, dreaming of the riches and the ultimate glory.

How to Set Up a Beginners Home Studio For $5 and Still Record Good Quality Audio

,
MUSIC STUDIO SOFTWARE :

I see guides all the time that purport to instruct new home recording hopefuls on the best equipment and software needed to start their home recording studio. There is one thing these "how-to" articles seem to have in common, which is that they explain very well how to set up an intermediate home studio, not a starter one.

How to Set Up a Beginners Home Studio For and Still Record Good Quality Audio

I remember how overwhelmed I felt when I first started recording my own stuff, mostly music, but then audio books, voice-overs, podcasts, audio-for video, etc. That was about 20 years ago, and to be honest, there are STILL topics in the realm of audio recording that confuse me! And I'm an engineer and producer! So I've developed a rule-of-thumb for what constitutes "audio recording guidance for beginners" that goes something like this: If that guidance contains the acronym, "MIDI" (or any acronym for that matter), it isn't for beginners." Why?

First, let's look at why someone might want to start recording audio from home. Guess what? Not everyone is a musician! In this multi-media, internet-dependent, YouTube-watching age, audio is everywhere; well, at least crappy-to-mediocre audio is everywhere;). From podcasts to audio books, advertisement voice-overs to e-learning, and video narration to, yes, music, we consume audio just about every minute of every day. So it is a mistake to assume that all, or even most, of the folks out there who really want good beginner advice on setting up and operation their own home recording studio are musicians. There is little need to tell those folks anything about the musical the instrument digital interface (MIDI) protocol.

Second, let's talk about musicians who have little-to-no experience recording. A LOT of these folks are singers and guitar-players, garage rock bands or folk singer-songwriters. In other words, they just want to get their music "out there" in the world in the form of recordings. Musicians tend to be artists...yeah, I know, that's a shocker, eh? Well artists are not always fabulous with the hard sciences, like electrical engineering or computer science. So even among the recording newbies out there, MIDI is not something they need immediately, if ever.

So now that I have described what advice for recording beginners does NOT look like, I suppose you'd like to know what it DOES look like. Okay, here goes. Download free audio recording software. There are a few good ones out there that are open-source "freeware," like Audacity for example. Total cost so far: .00. Next, get yourself some headphones or ear buds. If anyone in your house has an mp3 player, you already have at least one set lying around. Total cost so far: .00. Now all you need is a microphone. Your beginner home studio only needs a PC mic. Thanks to on-line role-playing games and internet communication, most folks will already have one of these as well. Total cost so far: .00. If you don't already have a PC microphone, you can get one almost anywhere for about .00. So the most expensive beginner home recording studio so far is .00. Once you have those things, you have your home studio!

Now I did promise in the title of this article to explain how to record good quality audio from a .00 studio. So what do I have to say for myself on that score? Only this: when it comes to audio quality, knowledge trumps gear. If you understand just a few key principles of audio recording, you can produce better quality audio from your .00 studio than someone with a 0 studio who doesn't know what they are doing! I've seen/heard this all too often.

Oh now I suppose you want me to reveal those few key principles, huh? Well, if you insist. First, and most importantly, record as little noise as possible. Second, be able to reduce and/or eliminate the noise you couldn't prevent. There will always be some, especially with the .00 studio. Said a different way, record as much of what you WANT people to hear as possible, and minimize stuff you don't want them to hear.

You can learn more about those key principles from the tutorials on the Home Brew Audio website. The video tutorials there start out assuming you're a beginner...a REAL beginner, and will show you how to set up the .00 studio and make your first recording in the first 5 lessons (should take less than an hour), which are FREE by the way;). Come check it out. I promise that "MIDI" isn't even mentioned in the first several videos.

All you have to do is disable MIDI playback in your recording program and listen to the notes from your keyboard. Once you've recorded your desired pattern via your MIDI to USB cable, simply transfer the notes to your recording program.

Music Studio Equipment for the Novice

,
MUSIC STUDIO SOFTWARE :

Do you have dreams about starting your own rock band? Want to learn the guitar but don't know the first thing about chords? Even the most inexperienced musician can create a home studio for jamming, recording, and experimenting without much knowledge. You might think you need a bunch of fancy music studio equipment to make it happen, but you really only need a few basics to get started. If you're headed to the music store, keep these tips in mind:

Music Studio Equipment for the Novice

  • Pick your instrument. This might seem obvious, but have you decided what you really want to play first? Of course you can pick up other instruments as well, but start with the one you're dying to get your hands on. Whether it's a guitar, the saxophone, or the bongo drums, follow your passion.
  • Get a good amp. If you love the sound of things now, wait till you hear it through a good amp. Getting at least one amp will help you rock out in style until you've got a full studio.
  • Research some free recording software. Did you come up with a new song but forget it? If you get some free recording software, you can make sure you don't lose any brilliant riffs or genius progressions.

It doesn't take much to get started even if you don't have a lot of money to buy expensive music studio equipment. Pick up the basics and upgrade them over time. Before you know it, you'll be making and mastering beats like the pros.

Where to Buy Music Studio Equipment

  • Talk to other musicians. Oftentimes, the best resource for this subject can be your music teacher, mentor, or other musicians in your area. They can probably tell you which local places will have what you're looking for, or where to get it elsewhere. They may even be able to get you a discount if they're plugged into the local music scene.
  • Go online. The internet is becoming a one-stop destination for buying music studio equipment. There are many different websites that sell both used and new equipment. You can buy everything from guitar straps to drum sets. A simple Google search will bring up hundreds of resources.
  • Read reviews. One of the best ways to find good retailers is to read the reviews of other customers. You can usually find them on the retailer's website or other places, like Yelp. If a company has enough good reviews, it's usually a good sign their products are worth it.

Make the most of your money by being a smart shopper. Even if you know exactly what you want, you can usually find it at a cheaper price if you look for a while. As always, don't be afraid to negotiate when looking for music studio equipment.

Music Maker Software - Start Making Your Own Music

Music maker is software that contains ready made beats in it for the user to select one particular beat from the database and play it at the desired tempo. It allows you to compose music in a relaxed manner without going to a studio. It reduces the expense of buying musical instruments and paying the instrumentalists. The only expense you need to do is for buying the software. Free software is also available but the features present in it may not be reliable. So it is always necessary to select the best software that suits all your requirements.

Essential features of a music maker:

Each and every music player needs a separate format of songs and it will not be able to play other formats of songs. When you create a song with much difficulty and if people cannot play it in their system, all your efforts will end up in vain. So you should save your song in a format that will be compatible with all the music players. The music maker you buy should have MP3 compatibility. Then another feature that is needed for a beat maker is its simple user interface.

The users should be able to understand the interface easily and start composing songs with it within little amount of time. The software should have tutorials to teach the beginners about how to use the software efficiently. The software should have a 16 track sequencer. Using this facility you can record beats, tunes and vocals in individual tracks and edit them separately in each layer. This gives you control over individual tracks and the time line. It is most important that the quality of sound produced from the beat maker is good.

Music maker allows you to add special effects to the song and makes the song more attractive. The most important aspect in buying a beat maker is its cost. Free beat makers are also available but you cannot be sure of the quality of the product. But you cannot buy a product that is very costly. So it is better to make an analysis of all the products that are available, their features and the price of each product. Select the one that has all the features needed by you and comes within your affordable price range.

Selection of a beat maker:

The Best Laptop For Music?

,
MUSIC STUDIO SOFTWARE :

Wanna go mobile with a powerful recording machine? Yes, the best laptop for music production... they do exist but you need to make sure you get the right one. I know them all, good and bad so hear me out.

The Best Laptop For Music?

Lots of people are going mobile these days and I did the same thing a while ago... I left my big old desktop computer for a sleek brand new laptop, it was a Mac Powerbook to be exact.

It used to be that if you were serious about recording in your home studio on a computer you pretty much had to go with a tower, or desktop to get enough power to run your audio recording software program. Well, over the last few years some manufactures have really put some effort into getting that same power that was only found on the big towers into their laptops and some of those have even made specialized models specifically for music production.

Now when I talk about the best laptop for music I don't mean one that has a great pair of heavy duty built-in speakers to crank up your mp3's! We are talking about the best laptop for music production so let's take a peak under the hood shall we?

You can't spend 0 on the same computer a school kid does and expect to have a powerful enough recording machine. A typical laptop these days might have something like this:

  • Intel core i3 2.26 GHz processor
  • 4GB of RAM
  • SATA 5400 RPM Hard Drive
  • 14" Display

And almost no external ports other than a few USB ports. Compare those specs to something like the Roc Box Laptop made by PCAudioLabs:

  • Intel Core i5 2.40GHz (520) Processor
  • up to 8GB of RAM
  • SATA2 7200rpm Hard Drive
  • 15.6" Display

And as far as external ports which are very necessary in your studio... 1 eSATA port, 2 Firewire 400 ports, 3 USB ports, 2 channel HD audio with 3D stereo enhanced sound system.

The most important differences here are very key things that you'll notice when recording...

Slightly faster processor, double the RAM (this is huge), the Hard Drive speed of 7200 is mandatory for most recording software programs, and of course the extra ports, most importantly Firewire. The PCAudioLab Rok Box Mobile Laptop HD Computer rivals some of the Rok Box desktop models which were also designed specifically with music production in mind.

How to Start a Recording Studio

,
MUSIC STUDIO SOFTWARE :

A lot of people own recording studios these days. Mostly, they are home studios in a spare bedroom or basement. But some people even take it a step further. I have friends who rent out commercial space to build recording studios. And a few people build full-blown, professional studios with million dollar budgets. But face it - most people don't have that kind of money to start a studio. Here's a good way to start a small, but profitable, recording studio even in your basement.

How to Start a Recording Studio

I could spend all day telling you about acoustics and room dimensions, but let's keep it simple. You need enough space to fit all your gear, plus the band or artist you are recording. That might include drums, guitar amps, keyboards, and more. Or maybe you will use a smaller space and just record one instrument at a time. Big or small, you can make it work. Just be aware of how much space you have to work with. Then try to cut down on reflections, or echoes in the room. Hard surfaces, like drywall or concrete, will reflect sound all over the place. To control it, you need to break up that surface so the sound bounces randomly - not back and forth between two walls. This can be done with a little acoustic foam, or even blankets if you have a low budget. Just cover some wall space, and then test it out. Use the "clap" technique. Walk around the room clapping your hands every few seconds. Listen to the way the sound echoes. As you move foam around, or add more foam, that sound will change. Just keep working at it until it sounds good to you.

Now you need to get sound onto tape, or a computer these days. You probably won't be using any analog recording equipment, or recording to cassette tapes. That's good. You save space by using digital equipment. I recommend at least a 2 channel USB interface, plugged into a newer computer. Computers are built so fast these days, it really doesn't matter if you spend 0 or 00 on a computer. Just get one that works, doesn't have a bunch of viruses, and fits your budget. A 2 channel interface, like the Digidesign Mbox 2, will give you room to record 2 microphones at once. That way you can track drums in stereo, then overlay guitars, bass, vocals, and whatever else. That's a basic recording, but it works. If you can afford it, go ahead and get a USB interface that has more channels. I like my TASCAM US1641. It has 8 mic preamps, with even more inputs on the back. Plenty of flexibility! Oh, and don't worry about software. You will get some kind of software with your interface. That should be enough to get you started.

A couple microphones, a set of headphones, and some cables will round out your studio. Get at least two microphones for your studio, and make sure they are in your budget. Get a condenser microphone for vocals or acoustic guitars, and a dynamic microphone for drums and electric instruments. You will add more to your collection later on, but that's enough to start. Get decent headphones right away. will get you headphones that sound much better than the ones that came with your iPod! The grab a few microphone cables, and you're basically done.

Sure, you will want to add more equipment later on. But this is enough to get you recording at first. Go find some bands to work with, and you're on your way to running a profitable studio!

How to Read Drum Sheet Music - Easy to Understand Explanation of How to Read Drum Music

,
MUSIC STUDIO SOFTWARE :

Do you struggle reading drum sheet music, whether you find tabs on the internet or 'real' drum music from a book or magazine? You might see them as a bunch of random lines and strange symbols? If this is the case you are right, they are. Let me burst the music bubble right now, those strange meaningless lines, dots and symbols are the language of music that is the key that unlocks the door to your favorite songs and bands.

How to Read Drum Sheet Music - Easy to Understand Explanation of How to Read Drum Music

There are really two types of drum sheet music.

1. Traditional Drum Music Notation

2. Drum Tabs found on the internet

Drumming Tabs

These tabs have become very popular over the last 10 years and you will find them exclusively online at drum, guitar and bass sites mainly. They have become so popular because the author can produce the tabs for free and are notated without the need to buy expensive software. Anyone viewing the tabs needs no software at the other end and thus creates a great partnership. Tabs represent the division of the beat with small dashes, these dashes also serve as the five line stave. The drum elements are written with circles or the letter o, hi-hats and cymbals are read with a x. Each drum or cymbal is written almost in the same way as traditional notation, I say almost!

The main problem with drum tabs is that it is very hard to write or indeed read the music with any degree of accuracy. The biggest problem is representing rhythmic values. I have had many students bring tabs that they want to learn, as a drum teacher your hands are tied unless you know the song and can work out the rhythms of the drum part elements. There is however a far easier way to read drum sheet music....

Learning To Read Traditional Drum Notation

Tradition tabs are written on sheet music manuscript paper or with notation software. The draw back to software is that they are usually expensive to buy and a steep learning curve is required to master the software. Some software requires the end user to also have the program to see the music. Other programs allow the drum music to be published with PDF programs which makes life easier for the end user. The obvious plus is that the drum tabs are much clearer and far easier to read than Word Document tabs.

If you visit the site below you will find lots of examples of drum music written out using dedicated software. You will also find lessons that teach you how to read drum music. It's actually very easy! Basically each element of the drum set has its own line or space. The notes towards the bottom of the five line stave are for low drums such as the bass drum. Generally notes at the top of the stave are for the cymbals. The notes themselves look like piano music and each symbol represents a different note length, this allows you to understand the exact drum rhythm of the music.

This is what is best about these tabs the rhythms can be precisely notated. If you are a drummer learning to play you need to develop your skills when you read drum rhythms. It is an essential tool for any musician, with a little effort anyone can learn to read notation very easily and it will open up your world to the music you love and want to play.

If you want to learn more about the drums and are interested in learning from a reliable website full of helpful advice why not check out Drum Lessons Beginners, you'll find a host of helpful articles, drum lessons and course reviews.

Audio Production Software - Making the Best Music

,
MUSIC STUDIO SOFTWARE :

Producing the best music can be a night mare to many producers. The different incoming audio channels prove to be a huge headache for those who do not know how to manage it. Most music producers encounter challenges in music production early on when the audio signals are first recorded, subsequently the editing stage is also a very important part. This is a very critical stage in producing audio music and at this point the good audio production software distinguish themselves from the inferior ones.

Audio Production Software - Making the Best Music

Proper choice of the latest software is required and highly recommended. Having the best audio production software can make music production troubles become minor inconveniences. The editing software enables one to edit the music, voice and other audio recordings from the different instruments. Editing the music can be done as simple as copying and pasting the recordings then the ability to add effects like amplification, echo and/or noise reduction to name a few.

As with any type of software, the top end audio production software provide a plethora of effects and functions. The effects in the software that when added to the music can drastic alter quality of the music. Editing the music correctly ensures that it gives the mood of the song without contrasting the theme. If the audio music effects added do not compliment the overall music "feel" it can alter the quality of the music in a negative light.

Audio production software also gives the flexibility of producing music in different files and greatly enables the producer to have the possibility of collaboration or increase the portability of the music to be edited at another studio and/or workstation

Some of the features that one should consider before purchasing the audio production software is how complicated is it to operate or one which doesn't require a professional mixer to perform the basic audio editing tasks. The software should have easy to use modules that can guide anyone in editing the music. It should have compatible programming and drivers to enable one to record or pull audio from different input sources without any hitches.

The latest audio production software should have not only the essential editing tools such as cut, copy paste, recording tools but also should contain other unique tools such as mixers, preset effects, filters and analyzing tools like waveform. The interface of the software should also be a factor to consider. Although one may question as to why this is important, being an experienced user, you should know that an easy to use interface can greatly increase the speed of your workflow. It is one of those small things that you don't have to worry about and rather just simply concentrate on your music.

Many of the latest audio editing making soft wares are available to purchase online or at your favorite music stores. To be able to decide on which version to order, one should also review the experiences of other users using the same software. One should also check the discount rates being offered, and the wide range of effects and features one will be able to add to the music from the software. In most cases the manufactures allow one to download sample software for free to test, before buying.

Learn To Make Rap Beats - It's Simple To Do!

,
MUSIC STUDIO SOFTWARE :

If you've ever dreamed of becoming a rapper, or if you've just ever thought that learning how to make rap beats would be cool, then you'll be surprised to realize that the process is surprisingly simple.
With the right equipment, of course.

Learn To Make Rap Beats - It's Simple To Do!

Without the right equipment, you'll simply be numbered among the many others flailing around in the dark. Let's face it, becoming a rap star and being paid thousands of dollars for other people to make rap beats for you may be a lifelong ambition, but if you haven't been able to reach that goal quite yet, then a tool that will let you make rap beats from the comfort of your own home would be just as good a place to start as any.

Even if you don't want stardom and instead just want to have a little fun by mixing your own music, programs that allow you to make rap beats will be useful for your extracurricular activities. If you find a program that is advanced enough to let you do more than make rap beats, then you can sell your work to the other average Joes who actually made it to rap star status.

But where, oh, where would you find a program that's able to fit all of your needs so well?

Usually when people make rap beats they have to do so in a studio.
Do you know what that means? That means big, expensive equipment that, to the non-beat-making individual, looks as advanced as alien technology. When you deal with studio-grade equipment, you have to have studio-grade knowledge, something most of us were not born with.

Don't get me wrong, a professional who likes to make rap beats all the time would be completely comfortable in a room full of gadgets. The real question is, what category do you fall under?

There is software on the market that, while it will help you make rap beats, can be almost as confusing as if you'd just walked into a studio if you don't know what you're doing. A run-of-the-mill program that allows the user to make rap beats usually lets you do one of two things: you can add already-recorded sounds to your own mixes (which doesn't work out well since most of those pre-recorded beats have bad quality and add very little to the overall cool factor of a beat), or you can mix audio files off of your computer together (which isn't exactly coming up with your own creation).

So what sort of program can you get that does all you need it to, managing to be a great fit for both professionals and amateurs alike, but is also more affordable than its competitors?

Well, never fear. No matter your experience level or your overall goals, Dub Turbo is proof that a program with the characteristics you're looking for isn't just a pipedream.

DAW For Beginners - The Digital Audio Workstation

,
MUSIC STUDIO SOFTWARE :

What is the best DAW for the beginner?

DAW For Beginners - The Digital Audio Workstation

In order to decide what DAW is the best for you, as a beginner, you first need to fully understand what a Digital Audio Workstation does.

First: DAW stands for Digital Audio Workstation. The key word here is: Digital. DAWs were originally created to find an alternative to recording with tape. DAWs are computer based, and play back digital audio tracks. In a simple nutshell: A DAW is a virtual studio residing inside of your computer.

You need to understand the differences between an actual Digital Audio Workstation, and a MIDI sequencing program. These two are often confused with one another. The most important key feature to any DAW that can separate them from MIDI sequencing softwares is it's ability to record audio. Some software, such as Propellerhead's Reason, have the strong ability to sequence music through MIDI, but don't have any capabilities to record actual audio. Simply put: You can use your MIDI keyboard to make beats, but you can't record vocals or live instruments.

So which DAW is best for you when you're just starting to learn?

There is a long list of available DAWs out there. Let's mention a few of them, shall we?

Ableton Live
ACID Pro
Adobe Audition
Cakewalk Sonar
Digital Performer
Fruity Loops Studio
GarageBand
Logic Pro
MAGIX Samplitude
Mixcraft
PreSonus Studio One
Pro Tools
Reaper
Record
Cubase
Nuendo
and the list goes on.

The Industry Standards

Which DAW do the professionals use?

Most professional studios will be found using one of the following DAWs: (With a majority using Pro Tools)

Pro Tools
Logic
Nuendo
Cubase
Sonar

In reality, all Digital Audio Workstations are fundamentally similar. They all do similar things (record your music), and operate in a similar way. So what sets them apart, and why would you choose one over the other?

Most people buy their DAW because someone has recommended one to them. Perhaps they feel one is easier to use than the other. But truthfully, they're all easy to use if you spend some time learning how to use them.

My recommendation: Choose a DAW that has a strong amount of users. The more people that use the same DAW as you, the more support that is available out there for it.

Don't Settle

Don't pick a DAW just because someone tells you it's cheap / free or "super easy to use" - you want something that is going to help you correctly capture your art, your music. Don't pick something just because you think it's easy. They're all easy. It just takes some time and dedication on your part.

Rap Beat Maker - The Software Vs Hardware Battle (and Conclusion)

,
MUSIC STUDIO SOFTWARE :

When it comes to making beats, many new and seasoned producers are starting to make the shift towards software. Why would they do that? Simple - software brings more to the table, both in terms of flexibility and workflow.

Rap Beat Maker - The Software Vs Hardware Battle (and Conclusion)

Many new producers looking to jump into the game often have a tough time decided what is better - a rap beat maker program or hardware workstation. While they each have their different pros and cons, it really boils down to what makes you feel the most comfortable (and ultimately the most productive).

Software vs. Hardware

In this piece, I wanted to break down the major differences of software and hardware, as well as highlight the pros and cons of each. If you're at a crossroads in determining what type of rap beat maker you need, this should help settle the score and move you in the right direction.

So, without wasting more time, let's get on with the show!

Hardware - The Good and the Bad

When it comes to making beats, some people have the urge to be more "hands on". They need to feel the music they make, and pounding away at keys and slamming drum pads gives them the ability to become a part of that music by playing it out naturally.

In hip-hop, hardware runs deep. The first line of MPC's (such as the MPC60), as well as keyboards like the infamous ASR-10 set the pace and changed the hip-hop beat game completely (other popular hardware workstations include the Roland Phantom, Korg Triton and Yamaha Motif as well). Anyone familiar with either beat maker knows the power that each of them hold.

With that said, check out the small list below outlining the different pros and cons of using hardware as your primary rap beat maker:

Pros

- Vintage sounds that you can't find anywhere else (or are tough to recreate).

- The feel that you get (hands on music production).

- Solid timing

Cons

- Low memory that limits sampling capabilities.

- Limited amount of on-board sounds. Purchasing more expansion boards is your only option to expand your sound range, which means you have to lay down more cash.

- Poor or limited sequencing and arrangement features.

- Typically expensive. The more you need, the more you will spend (we're talking spending thousands, not hundreds).

Software - Good vs. Bad

Software has grown popular over the years and has changed the way many people produce and create music today. In fact, using software as a rap beat maker has become more of the norm. New producers on a limited budget are finding it easier to start making beats and producing music with nothing more than their computer, beat making software and a creative mind!

There are a number of different software programs available for music production. You might be familiar with popular programs like FL Studio and Reason (which are great, but can still be pricey for some), as well as other similar programs like DubTurbo.

With all of that said, let me quickly break down the benefits (as well as the downsides) of using software:

Pros

- Since software uses the hard drive on your computer for memory, your memory power is limited only to the size of your hard drive(s). This means room for as many sounds and effects as you want!

- Unlimited amount of options for plug-ins and expansion.

- All in one solution (sequencing, mixing, programming).

- Costs much less than most hardware, yet can achieve similar results (or better).

- Easy to update and maintain.

- Doesn't require any external pieces for operation - just your computer (however, you can use midi controllers to play keys and drums to get that "feel").

Cons

- Not as mobile as hardware (unless you want to lug your PC around).

- Quality poses a minor issue and may not be as good as some hardware workstations

- Higher-end software performance can be poor if not using a high-end PC.

The Conclusion

As you can see, using either hardware or software has its benefits and downsides. The truth is, you can achieve a great sound by going either route, so it is ultimate up to you to decide. Now that you are aware of some of the differences and similarities, you should be capable of deciding what is best for you.

The Pros and Cons of the $5 Home Recording Studio

,
MUSIC STUDIO SOFTWARE :

Most people don't know that they can get started recording audio with a budget as small as .00. The only reason I don't say zero dollars is that if you don't have a microphone, you'll need to buy one. A plastic PC mic will even suffice at this point. Now, those folks with experience recording audio from home will likely take issue with what I just said, so for them allow me to clarify. I recommend the cheapest recording set-up for beginners because they can still learn most of the basics they'll ever need to know with that gear. Also, by learning the limitations of their current set-up, they will be better informed as to what else they need to get to the next level. I do not propose that the lowest budget recording studio will allow the most stunning audio ever. But most folks, even you experts out there, would be surprised at how good the audio produced from a "low-end" studio can be!

The Pros and Cons of the Home Recording Studio

The Pros of a .00 Recording Studio

So what are the "pros" of a .00 home recording studio? Let's take a look at the top three:

  • Cost: According to the US Census Bureau (From their website: 2005pubs/p23-208.pdf) as long ago as 2003, "The majority of households have personal computers and Internet access. In 2003, 70 million American households, or 62 percent, had one or more computers, up from 56 percent in 2001." More recent estimates put that percentage closer to 70 percent. That means that if they wanted to, 7 out of every 10 people in the US could start a home recording studio in the next hour.
  • Capability: In 2010, the availability of open source audio software and the average quality of consumer computers make it possible to do:multi-track" (recording one sound, then recording another on top of the first as you listen, etc.) recording at this budget level. Editing and mixing tools in the software make it possible to pan sounds left and right, equalize and otherwise treat or fix audio problems, and mix down to a stereo master file. That was pretty-much unheard of 10 years ago.
  • Affordable Upgrading: If you walked into a music store today and told a salesman you wanted to start a home studio, he'd try to talk you into spending several hundred (or even thousands of) dollars. You'd have some pretty nice gear, but odds are that you won't need a majority of that gear to do what you need to do. You'll also be totally overwhelmed by the knowledge needed to operate all this gear. The .00 studio is easy to learn, and allows you to incrementally add gear and/or software in order to achieve exactly the quality you need. That will save you time, frustration, and money in the long run.

The Cons of a .00 Recording Studio

  • Noise: At the lowest budget, sound is recorded through a very small microphone going directly into a factory sound card on an "average" computer. You'll have noticed that there is a lot of buzzing, humming and hissing noise when you record with this equipment. There are things you can do to minimize that, such as keeping the mic wire as far from plugs or other power sources as possible. You can also treat the noise after it's recorded. But at the end of the day, the physical limitations in the amplifiers in "regular" sound cards, and construction of the .00 PC mics will mean a fair amount of noise is inevitable.
  • Capability: There are things you simply cannot do at the lowest budget level, such as use make use of MIDI, virtual instruments, record more than one track at a time, etc.
  • Ease of use: The .00 budget studio doesn't have room in the budget for things like microphone stands, patch bays, cables, etc. It can be pretty slow-going trying to set the PC mic up to capture piano or guitar without a little more effort than many folks find feasible. Also, the cables for these mics tend to be pretty short, again making it difficult logistically to record.

Those are the major pros and cons of starting your home studio with the "zero-to-five-dollar" budget. The great thing about that budget level, though, is that you have little-to-nothing to lose and everything to gain. Once you get comfortable with the limitations, you can address them one-by-one, incrementally improving your set-up according to your own needs. Chances are good that if all you need to do is record your voice for podcasts, or video narration, you can get the quality you need by spending as little as extra dollars for a USB microphone. Whatever your ultimate needs are, you really can't go wrong starting at the lowest budget and working your way up.

5 Tips to Setting Recording Levels For Music Production - Cubase LE, Cubase SX and VST Plugins

,
MUSIC STUDIO SOFTWARE :

Recording levels are of the utmost importance when you are producing your music. This pertains to the level for the racks or the mixes. There has always been a common answer for this being to set the level at max just below the digital zero. Referring to the top of the meter. Unfortunately, many of the experts will most likely tell you this is wrong.

5 Tips to Setting Recording Levels For Music Production - Cubase LE, Cubase SX and VST Plugins

One of the things you may want to keep in mind with this industry is not to believe everything you hear. (No pun intended). There are those in the industry that will tell you anything in order to get you to buy their wares. Anyone that has been in the computer music realm will tell you that digital audio has just gotten to the point where sound quality is acceptable.

Remember one basic factor about your quest of composing music and that is the purpose of recording sound. Which is of course so we can listen and enjoy it. You need to learn and be able to determine what parts of the music must be louder than others. For example, a pop ballad should be lower on track than a thrash metal. A guitar solo should be above the normal background playing.

Your first inclination may be to use only your digital meters and record these separately. On the surface, it sounds logical, but in fact, you could end up with the very opposite results. Reason being the digital recorders use peak meters, whereas music listeners use their hearing meaning they utilize average characteristics when judging the levels. If not done correctly then it means the listener will be forced to turn the volume down.

You can prevent your frustrations if you just record everything at the proper levels right from the start. It would be right to share one track between two instruments at least. This should only be done when the two specific instruments are not playing at the same time. So you would record these instruments at the correct level that they would be at when physically playing the song. Use your estimation qualities to get the results that are right. You want to hear what the end listeners should here. They won't be using meters they will be using their natural ability of hearing.

Stay consistent with your entire album, if the listener has to keep getting up to adjust the volume you can bet they won't be too impressed.

If you try and do your sound recordings according to all the information that various people give you then you will soon become discouraged. What may work in one song will certainly not work in another. Then there will be all the controversy to sort though. Learn the basics, follow your judgment and trust your ears. Composing music is suppose to be an enjoyable event even if its your livelihood, if you didn't have passion for music its unlikely you would even be involved in computer music.
